These were taken sometime overnight last night I have received a report from a member of Neighbourhood Watch regarding a scam falsely claiming to be someone from BT contacting people about an imaginary unpaid bill. This scam has been going on for well over a year now. There is a message regarding this on the BT website, the content of the warning from BT is as follows: "Someone claiming to be from BT called saying I'd be cut off unless I paid them Please be very careful as criminals have been phoning some of our customers and trying to trick them into giving out their bank details. During the calls they'll claim you owe money on your bill and threaten to disconnect your phone line immediately if you don't pay them over the phone. Unfortunately some customers have given out bank account details because they've been worried about having their phone line cut off. A number of phone companies have been targeted and the police are investigating. BT Security is also looking into the incidents. BT may have to call you about a debt, but we'll never disconnect a phone line during the call. Don't give out any banking details over the phone unless you're absolutely certain who you're talking to." It happened between 10pm on Tuesday 30 August and 6.30am on Wednesday 31 August in Nash Lane. The offenders gained access to the rear of the house via an insecure side gate and stole the keys to a silver Vauxhall Corsa five door car, registration number VE56 BUU, which they then stole off the drive. They also took a flat screen Sony TV and a black leather handbag. The value of the car was £6,700, the TV was worth £250, and the handbag was of sentimental value as it was a gift. It is believed the offenders travelled to Belbroughton in a blue Rover 25, which was itself stolen from Groveley Lane, Cofton Hackett, near Bromsgrove, between midnight and 9am on Wednesday. It was found abandoned in High Street, Belbroughton. DC Tony Flannagan of West Mercia Police appealed for anyone who knew who the offenders were, or saw anything suspicious to contact officers on 0300 333 3000 quoting incident 101-s-310811 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. He said: "Burglaries can have a significant impact on peoples' lives. It can take a long time to come to terms with the loss of personal possessions as well as the loss of confidence that can result from a stranger being in the house. In this case the victim was elderly, and very shaken. "While burglaries remain relatively rare in West Mercia, we are reminding householders to ensure their homes are secure by preventing access being gained to the rear, and locking doors and accessible windows. "It is also a good idea to property mark expensive electrical items such as TVs. There are a variety of ways of doing this, such as using a forensic marking solution or an ultra violet pen, and it is also a good idea to place items on the national property register, Immobilise (http://www.immobilise.com/). Police have issued an ‘if in doubt keep them out’ warning after a series of distraction burglaries in North Worcestershire. Officers are investigating whether two incidents in the Wyre Forest area yesterday are linked and appealing for sightings of a red car thought to be involved. Two further distraction burglaries have also been reported in the Bromsgrove District. All of them involved people talking their way into the homes of elderly women living alone although nothing was stolen in any of the incidents. A man who called at a pensioner’s home in Wassell Drive, Bewdley, at 4.40pm yesterday (Thursday) claimed to be from the water board and needed to check her water pressure. She let him in but became suspicious and challenged him, at which point he left the house along with another man who suddenly appeared from a bedroom having sneaked in unnoticed. They ran off towards Cordle Marsh Road and are believed to have left the area in a red, new-style VW Golf. Both men were white and one was in his early 20s, around 5 feet 2 inches in height, and slim. He was described as “baby-faced” and had a pale, clear complexion. He was wearing a black beanie hat, a waist length, bomber-style, black jacket which was zipped up, and black trousers. The other man was of medium build and about 5 feet 4 inches, and was also wearing dark clothing with a dark hat and a scarf pulled up around his face. Later at around 5.30pm (Thursday) at Highfield Road, Cookley, a man called at the home of an elderly woman and said he needed to check her electricity and gas as there had been an explosion nearby. He spent around 15 minutes looking at various appliances before leaving the house. He was described as white with a dark complexion, in his 30s, around 6ft tall and wearing a dark cap, and dark jacket and trousers. Detective Constable Lloyd Davies said that a red Golf had been noticed in suspicious circumstances in the area at the time and he appealed for further sightings of that vehicle and any information about who was using it. Another distraction burglary was reported at St Kenelm’s Road, Romsley, on Tuesday (February 8) after a blonde woman called on a pensioner there at 10.30am and said she needed to check her boiler. She was allowed in and spent around five minutes in the kitchen before leaving. Checks were made and no-one had been scheduled to visit the pensioner that day. The woman who called was around 5 feet 2 inches in height wearing a fluorescent yellow, sleeveless top, and also had a lanyard with ID card. She was with a white man who parked outside in a small white van. In Belbroughton Road, Clent, near Stourbridge, a middle aged man wearing a blue anorak called at the home of a pensioner between 10.30am and 11am on Tuesday, January 25, and said he needed to inspect her lintels. He was taken through to the back of the house and spent several minutes looking at her windows before leaving via a rear gate. The woman later checked with the local housing trust who confirmed that no-one was scheduled to visit that area. The incident was reported to police yesterday (February 10). West Mercia Police's ‘Knock Knock’ campaign aims to raise awareness about the security measures people should take before they let anyone into their home or allow them to do maintenance work. DC Davies said: “Our advice is that people should not be afraid to ask callers for identification and check with the company concerned if they are not convinced the caller is genuine. If you are in any doubt don’t let them into your home. A legitimate caller will not mind waiting outside while you check their identification out properly. “Distraction burglaries often take place during daylight hours, in front of the community. The criminals who commit these crimes commonly target the elderly and more vulnerable members of our communities. They work in teams so that one person can engage the victim in conversation, while the other person or people search the victim’s home for money and other valuables. “We are asking communities to help us arrest these criminals by reporting any unfamiliar people they see knocking on doors and any cars that are parked for long periods of time in their local area. Take a note of the vehicle registration numbers and descriptions of the people and then call the police. A call to us could provide a piece of vital information that enables us to bring those responsible for these cruel offences to justice. “If the police and the community work together and look after our vulnerable neighbours we can reduce the number of victims who are affected by this dreadful crime.” Anyone with information about the distraction burglaries in North Worcestershire should call Kidderminster or Bromsgrove CID on 0300 333 3000, quoting reference 560-S-100211, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. Research shows that fewer distraction burglaries are committed in areas where there are visible and subtle signs of a caring and supportive community. You can help by: Keeping an eye on people calling in the area or acting suspiciously * Noting the registration numbers of vehicles parked in your area for a period of time * Encouraging vulnerable people to check a caller’s identity carefully and to keep their door on a chain. If they have any doubt about the caller’s integrity they should not let them into their home * Call on vulnerable people on a regular basis. If it is not too much trouble, help them keep their front garden tidy and find reliable tradespeople for any maintenance work that really does need to be undertaken * Calling 0300 333 3000 to provide information to the police about suspicious people, activity or vehicles however insignificant it may seem * If a distraction burglary has taken place or been attempted, encourage the victim to report it as quickly as possible * For further information about preventing distraction burglaries and other crime prevention advice please visit the force website www.westmercia.police.uk. BLAKEDOWN Burglary - Tennis Club. A door has been forced open and a search made of the premises, sometime between Tuesday 11th January and Thursday 13th Distraction burglary in Kidderminster
Police are appealing for witnesses and information about a distraction burglary in Kidderminster. It happened yesterday (Tuesday, January 11) between 11am and 1.30pm. The victim, an elderly woman, answered a knock at the door of her home in Cherry Orchard to a man who told there was a water leak next door, and she allowed him access to the kitchen and back garden. Nothing was stolen. The man was white, about 30 years old, wearing a navy blue jacket and a granddad-style flat dark coloured cap. He was about 5ft 6ins to 5ft 7ins tall, and is described as being a bit fat. He possibly had gingery brown hair. House to house inquiries are being carried out, and leaflets are being delivered in the area. Police are looking into whether the incident is linked to another distraction burglary in Queensway, Bewdley, between 3pm and 3.40pm yesterday when a man knocked on an elderly woman’s front door and said that the water might be disconnected as they were going to be doing some work on the pipes in theroad. She let him into her kitchen where he appeared to carry out some work under the sink. A large amount of cash was stolen. The offender for that offence is described as white, short and slim, and was wearing a dark coloured beanie hat. This incident was the subject of a separate press release sent earlier today.. Witnesses or anyone with information about the Kidderminster incident are asked to contact DC Vicki Collier on 0300 333 3000 quoting 683-s-110111 or ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111. For the Bewdley incident the contact is PC Adrian Bartlett and the incident number is 462-S-110111. West Mercia Police's ‘Knock Knock’ campaign aims to raise awareness about the security measures people should take before they let anyone into their home or allow them to do maintenance work. The following advice could help to reduce the chance of a distraction burglary happening: Don’t keep large sums of money in your home * Keep an eye on people calling in the area or acting suspiciously * Encourage vulnerable neighbours to keep their door on a chain and to check a caller’s identity card carefully * Trust your instincts – if you have any doubt about a caller’s identity don’t let them in * Call 0300 333 3000 to provide information to the police about suspicious people, activity or vehicles however insignificant it may seem * If a distraction burglary has taken place or been attempted, encourage the victim to report it as quickly as possible. Thanks kate Warning after distraction burglary in Bewdley Police are appealing for witnesses and information after cash was stolen from an elderly woman during a distraction burglary in Bewdley. It happened yesterday (Tuesday, January 11) between 3pm and 3.40pm at her home in Queensway. A man knocked the front door of the woman’s home and said that the water might be disconnected as they were going to be doing some work on the pipes in her road. She then let him into her kitchen where he appeared to carry out some work under the sink. Having said he needed to go to his van, he left the house but did not return. He was seen walking off towards Cordle Marsh Road. A short while later the elderly woman discovered that a large amount of cash had been taken and her bedroom had been searched while she was distracted in the kitchen. The offender is described as white, short and slim, and was wearing a dark coloured beanie hat. PC Adrian Bartlett said: “It’s always concerning when elderly members of the community are targeted in this way and we are appealing for help in identifying this offender. “It’s important that people are aware that this incident has happened and that they are vigilant themselves. We’d also encourage anyone with elderly neighbours or family members, especially those living alone, to discuss this with them. “Remind them to keep their doors locked and to use spy-holes and door chains if they have them fitted. Encourage them to double-check the identity of any caller and not to invite into their homes anyone they do not know or are not expecting.” Anyone who has information about this incident or notices any unusual activity in their neighbourhood should contact PC Bartlett on 0300 333 3000, quoting incident 462-S-110111, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
