A good win for Blakedown.
Played at Blakedown on Sunday 8th August.
Blakedown's captain Russ Welbourn actually
won the toss for the first time this season;
a good start by all accounts! Blakedown
decided to bat and made a good start, Chris
Syner and John Goodman putting on 64 for
the first wicket, in very humid conditions.
A few cameo innings and Blakedown finished
on 198 for 9 after 40 overs, with Chris Syner
top scoring with 65. For once the Blakedown
run machine, Rob Chatwin, missed out on a
big score (22), victim of a very flukey run-out.
The Old Georgians fielder threw at the stumps
at the bowlers end and missed by a mile!
By such a degree that he actually hit the
stumps at the other end, the end to which
Rob was ambling believing he was in
no danger and was run out by a couple of
yards!
So at tea, which was provided by Steve &
Alison Anstey (with a little help from Elsie
I'm sure) and was superb, Blakedown were
in a reasonable position........but Old Georgians
have some very good batsmen and we were one
regular bowler short.
Ian Challis bowled the first over, which
was the worst he had bowled all season!
He could have been bowling in slippers, wearing
a smoking jacket and running in backwards
for all the use he was and Old Georgians
were off to a flyer. Worse followed
bad in his second over, but from then on
he bowled like a demon. In fact the
whole Blakedown team bowled and fielded like
demons, with superb catches from Chris Syner & Steve
Anstey and two great takes for 'keeper'
Russ Welbourn. A good knock of 58 by
the Old Georgians captain, shepherding the
tail enders, ensured Old Georgians got over
the 100 mark and salvaged some respectability.
Two particularly pleasing moments at the
end involved two of Blakedown's Junior players.
Jordan Anstey, playing for the opposition,
hitting his dad Steve for 2 runs with a very
classy looking pull shot, and Ross Syner
bowling for the first time this season, taking
a wicket clean bowled, with his fifth ball
to end the Old Georgians innings.
Blakedown season now stands played 9, won
7, lost 2, with one game remaining.
Not at all bad.......................
