The new cricket season began in style on
Sunday May 15th with a fine win for Blakedown
over a good Swan Elfrick side in glorious
sunshine. It seems that our early season
net practice paid off with some fine bowling
performances, notably from Ian Challis, whose
opening spell was as good as I have seen
him bowl for a few seasons and he was unlucky
not to have finished up with more wickets.
Without our other regular opening bowler we
did very well to restrict Swan Elfrick to
119, getting them all out in the 36th over.
I must also mention our fielding which was
also top notch, with Albi Brookes taking
two absolute stunning catches.
Blakedowns innings got off to a brisk start,
but some tight bowling from Swan Elfrick pegged
us back. A dubious umpiring decision
cost us our first wicket, but this galvanised
Captain Russ Welbourn to get his head down
and graft an innings of 48 before finally
being caught at mid off. A pity really
because a score of 50 means he would
have to buy the beers later! The
final runs were struck by Mark Swindells
with overs to spare and for the loss of just
four wickets.
A good start to the season and some thank
you's
To Mrs. Anstey for providing the teas which
were, as usual, the envy of every other cricket
club - superb!
To everyone who helped to repair the cricket
square at the end of last season. It
has made a significant difference to the
performance of the wicket which is 100% improved
on last season.
To everyone who gave up their time to help
with repairs to the pavilion and for
doing an excellent job, unfortunately we
will be asking for the same thing again soon.
We will post a notice for the date and anyone
from the village who can help out with a
little woodwork, electrical work or plumbing
would be made very welcome.
