VOLUNTARY WORK

The Sports Centre is looking for volunteers in a range of positions. 
All voluntary work is good experience for the world of work and can be included on CV’s,
job applications and University applications. It's a great way of extending your skills base.
We need:
•   Web Site Manager (currently part of the Churchill and Blakedown village web site)
•   Grounds Caretakers who can be creative in the care of the sports centre and also take pride
in the skilful preparation required for the field for playing sport.
•   Playground volunteer
There are other roles that may match your current skills or you may have a specific interest
which we could help you develop. 
The Chairman would be happy to provide references for your future career. 
We are a small and dedicated team and are always ready to welcome new volunteers.

The Sports Pavilion

The Pavilion rebuild is getting ever closer and the hope is that work will start June/July time. The funds are in place to go to tender and we are seeking extra funding from Worcestershire Leader funding to re-introduce some energy saving elements that have had to be withdrawn due to the budget.
The current building is also slightly smaller to meet the budget restraints, but is essentially the same that received planning permission November 2008. The new design is with planning now for their approval of the changes.

Many hands (and wheelbarrows) make light work at Churchill and Blakedown Sports Centre

 

How long does it take one man and a barrow and shovel to shift 6 tonnes of hardcore into holes in the car park? The answer is 6 hours.  And it would be hard labour indeed if only one volunteer had the task of filling in the many potholes and puddles in the sports centre car park.

HOWEVER when you get a great gang of barrowmen and women, diggers and rake technicians all together at the same time the work is done in just one hour!  It is satisfying, friendly and very efficient. 

Thank you to all the fantastic souls who turned up to pitch in on a chilly Saturday morning in March, some with children who all played their part as well.  Community graft has made the car park at Churchill and Blakedown Sports and Recreation Centre much better for everyone, but especially for the children who’ve almost had to swim on a rainy day to get in and out of school and the playground.

A special mention should also be made to the hardcore suppliers, Talbots Transport.  Usually they make much larger deliveries but made a special exception for the Sports Centre because it is a charity, delivering exactly the amount for the job in a punctual and fuss-free manner.  It was a pleasure to do business with you!

Race Night is a galloping success!!

When your horse wins a race you need to reward his or her efforts - so a carrot was included in the prizes given by Churchill and Blakedown Sports and Recreation Centre at the recent race night.

 Punters flocked to the Parish Rooms on Friday 6th March and were greeted with the atmosphere and action of a great night of racing.  Proceeds from the Race Night will help towards the cost of replacing the current pavilion with a state of the art facility.  Local businesses had sponsored races, helping to swell the coffers before the fun had even started.  They all deserve another mention for their efforts in getting the whole evening off the ground:

As each race was announced, the lights were dimmed, and the film started rolling.  When the horses galloped off, the roof of the Parish Rooms rose with the enthusiastic cheering of the owners and backers! Many cash prizes were won during the night, and the winning owners received champagne, chocolates and flowers.  Wine and beer flowed, further raising the total funds for the night and lubricating the enthusiasm for the efforts of the horses.

Local band Mooch provided some mid-evening entertainment with many cover versions of favourite songs and some original sounds.

The evening was hosted by Russ and Diane Welbourn who deserve a huge thank you for organising such a lovely evening.

Anyone for Cricket?

For involvement, fitness and fun this summer join in with Cricket.  Practise nets are booked on Sundays throughout April for the summer season.  Contact 700623 for details.  If nothing else the fabulous cricket teas are worth turning up for, and you never know, some strawberries and cream might even make it onto the menu!

A CHRISTMAS INVASION FOR BLAKEDOWN - THE FIRST EVER BIMBLE STRIDES OUT
Christmas came early to Blakedown, on the morning of Saturday 20th December to be exact.More than 100 Father Christmases, reindeer and assorted festive characters strode out across the fields to stave off the Winter chill. The first ever Blakedown Bimble attracted about 120 entrants, ranging from babes in pushchairs to people in their 70's! It was organised by the team usually responsible for the far more energetic Blakedown Bolt 10km run. One of the organisers Lesley Brown said:
‘When we put on the Blakedown Bolt every June, people are always asking us to do some sort of fun event that’s suitable for children, and for members of the community who aren't feeling quite as athletic as our Bolt runners. So we came up with the Bimble which is a 2.5 mile leisurely walk. As the date is just before Christmas, the fancy dress theme sort of suggested itself’.
Entrants paid a small fee to take part, which included mulled wine and a mince pie at the Old House at Home, with a rousing session of carol singing led by Father Paul. As with the Blakedown Bolt 10km run, profits are going to the fund for rebuilding Blakedown’s sports pavilion. Another organiser, Vicky Swindells, who's also a parish councillor said:
'It's great to bring people together like this at Christmas, and we're hoping it will help raise awareness of the Bolt 10km run. Perhaps we'll even recruit a few more willing marshals for the next Blakedown Bolt 10km which on the the evening of Friday 19 June 2009.’

Santa's Blakedown Bimble

A leisurely walk followed by refreshments and carols
Saturday 20 December, 10.45am registration,
walk starts 11.00am
You’re warmly invited to take part in a leisurely
festive walk (approximately 2.5 miles). It starts on the sports field
behind Blakedown School, and finishes at the Old House at Home
for refreshments and carols, around 12.00 noon. Please note the
route includes two stiles.
It would be great if you can dress up for the occasion – Santa costumes,
elves, reindeers and fairies are welcome! Festive hats for
the less flamboyant! Suitable for all ages, but children must be accompanied.
Cost £2.50 per person, which includes mulled wine/hot chocolate and a mince pie.
Numbers are limited, so please send in your entry and payment, using the slip below, as
soon as possible. You’ll be issued with tickets, but please note you will still need to register
for your refreshment tokens on the day, at 10.45am.

EXCITING NEWS!!

Wyre Forest District Council has approved the plans to rebuild the Sports Centre. The Sports Committee old and new have worked for a long time planning the rebuilding; it is great to have taken a giant step to its fruition. If you would like to see the plans they can be seen at-

Thanks to all the committee old and new, all people who have contributed their time and energy to fund raising, organising events and maintaining the pavilion. Long may that continue.

The Sports committee would also like to thank those who give up their time to run the sports clubs, organised often in there own time without financial reward. Without these the Sports Centre would cease to exist.

CHURCHILL AND BLAKEDOWN SPORTS AND RECREATION CENTRE

After a successful AGM at the beginning of September the Committee faces the year ahead with renewed vigour. 

The plans for the new pavilion have been submitted for planning permission.  Please come and see them at our next meeting on Thursday October 2nd for further details of the meeting contact Fred on 07905094822.

The Fun Day at the end of August provided the opportunity for mainly local villagers to recount their summer adventures, enjoy some gentle sport and excellent refreshments in, just for once, some clement weather.

The Cricket season has been marked by the bad weather once again but a number of matches were able to be played and the development of the club continues – any one interested as player, score keeper, umpire or spectator please contact Russ Welbourn.

The season ended with an ‘Award Ceremony Dinner ‘ at The Swan with the presentation of ‘The Brian Goodman Memorial Sheild’ to the ‘Man of the Season’, the name of which a closely guarded secret at the time of press!!.

Each week on a Thursday (early) afternoon the dog agility group meet and provide a wonderful performance worthy of any show ground free to any one wishing to enjoy a walk and watch.  Young children are fascinated by the ‘tricks’ the dogs perform, it really is a pleasure to see.

The committee would like to thank all the local villagers who carefully use the field.  Dogs are welcome as long as they are cleared up after.   Some diligent users report damage and clear up litter this is thoroughly appreciated; any improvements that you feel you can make please feel free to suggest them to Diane Welbourn 01563 700623.  Left over bulbs or plants from your garden would be most welcome, as would the labour to plant them!  Your efforts are noticed and make a significant contribution to the running of the grounds.    

Finally please support us over the coming year, contact any of the above if you feel you have materials, a skill, or financial help which will enable us to replace the pavilion facilities to match the useful beauty of the sports field enabling us to accommodate further recreation activities. 

If you are not sure where we are situated you can access the field from either the Birmingham Road or the Belbroughton Road.  The field is directly behind the school.  The driveway from the Birmingham Road leads up next to the school nearly opposite Station Road.  The path to the Belbroughton Road leads straight on to paths leading to Ladies Pool and beyond the perfect start to a lovely walk.
