Mary has made some magnetic bookmarks, price £1.50 each, to raise money
for the Church. They are ideal as stocking fillers or for sending
with Christmas cards and very useful to anyone who likes reading, you will
never lose your page in a book again as they will not drop out.

Thanks to the generous support we have recently received from local charities, Kids Club has been able to purchase two basketball systems. Playing basketball and netball has been one of the most popular activities during the Autumn. A number of the children helped to plan and took a large part in the Harvest Family Service at the beginning of October. They have also covered and brought items to fill up five shoe-boxes to support the annual ‘Operation Christmas Child’ appeal.
Due to the dark evenings there have been fewer children at the club, so it has been decided to have a break in the Spring Term, which is very short, and recommence after Easter, when it will be possible to use the Millennium Green for outdoor games.
So the start-up date to put into your new diaries and calendars is TUESDAY, 8TH APRIL, 2008.

REMEMBRANCE
SUNDAY 11th November
The service this year will be held in Churchill Church, St James the Great in Halfshire, starting with a short service at CHURCHILL WAR MEMORIAL.
Please assemble at the memorial at 10.15 a.m. for a short service and the laying of wreaths and crosses at 10.30 a.m., followed by parading the short distance to the church in time for the 2 minutes’ silence at 11.00 a.m.
The Branch would appreciate all able members to be in attendance and take an active role in the parade; this also applies to Poppy Collectors and members of the public, who are all welcome.
Parking is available near the church and memorial. Please note the lane from the memorial to the Church is to be closed to through traffic from 10.25 a.m. until 10.55 a.m.

The Swan at Blakedown played host to guitar legend Trevor Burton and his band on Friday 19th October in what was hopefully the first of a series of regular gigs to be presented at the venue. Trevor
is best known as a founder member of “The Move” but his career
has developed and extended from his chart success days and he has
since played with some of the biggest names in rock including Steve
Winwood and Robert Plant. To
an appreciative and knowledgeable crowd, the band played a varied set
of blues and rock including their interpretations of many classics as
well as some of Trevor’s own compositions.
The new management of The Swan deserve applause themselves for presenting the show and further live music is scheduled for this Saturday 27th October with “Memphis In The Meantime” who are rapidly becoming more well known through their musicianship and performances on both local and national stages as well as successful appearances at major festivals.

The PARISH PLAN is under way.
We have had two meetings. The whole idea was initiated by the Parish Council, but it’s not ‘their baby’ EVERY ONE is entitled to a say and as many people as possible will be consulted. The first meeting was just to kick off, second meeting was with the Local Authority Officer in charge to advise and steer us.
There are benefits:
There is as ever lots more to do and just for once you are not being asked to DO anything (so heave a sigh of relief!) I just wanted to make sure you knew for the web site and for your many roles in the community. You may however at some point be pressed for some opinions.
Of course if you want to be more involved then of course you are more than welcome as is any one in the parish – OR who uses the parish (like myself) or for example out of parish families who use the school, parish rooms, sports field etc etc

CHURCHILL AND BLAKEDOWN GIFT DAY

How much do you value your churches? Whatever the answer, we are sure that you would miss them if they disappeared.
No long explanations for the need of a GIFT DAY. Giving by regular worshippers is increasing, but so is the cost of keeping the churches open for the use of the whole community. There are no plans to close any church but, who knows, this could change if there is no demand for Sunday worship or there are not enough funds to pay the bills.
GIFT DAY gives the whole community an opportunity of helping to ensure that the churches are in the villages for future generations.
Some may wish to contribute regularly through the Weekly Freewill Envelope scheme, take out a covenant or leave something for the work of the church in their will. If so, have a word with the Wardens or Church Treasurers for advice.
Gift envelopes will be delivered throughout the parish but will not be collected.
Instead, Churchill Church will be open on the Saturday morning between 10:30 - 1:00 to receive your donation.
Blakedown Church will also be open as there will be a coffee morning and bring and buy sale with various stalls from 11:00 - 1:00, so you can hand in your donation then.
Alternatively, donations can be handed in at the Sunday services or can be handed to one of the church officers.
Thank you for your support and for the help we anticipate from you in the future.
Blakedown Churchyard Maintenance
Although the projects to provide the inside and outside facilities we need
so badly to make our Church more appealing and attactive to both the young
and old in the Parish are on temporary hold until we provide mor information
to the various authorities concerned, there is one aspect which we can
all help with in the meantime.
The visual appearance of our Churchyards needs constant attention. We have
the grass cut regularly but everything else must be done by Church members.
Could you give an hour or more occaisionally to do a little tidying up?
It needn't be heavy work, just brushing the path, removal of twigs, leaves
and dropped items on both sides of the fence, weeding the flower bed and
any other little jobs that need doing.
If you are able and willing to give a little help, the please contact Keith Own on 700957 who will ensure the tools you may need are available.
If this work is carried out regularly we may be able to enter the Best
Kept Churchyard competition ourselves next year, as Broome are doing this
year!

The Blakedown 8 are 4 couples from Blakedown who after realising we didn't
get out as much as we used to because of young children, and having
long
experience of organising similar events through work organisations,
Round
Table, etc thought we would organise one for ourselves.

Blakedown Primary School PTA
Blakedown C of E Primary School PTA would like to thank everyone who purchased
raffle tickets for their recent Summer draw held on the 10th July at the
school's annual Sports Day. The raffle raised £529.10 and was a great success
with 29 fantastic prizes being won.
Our Christmas Grand Raffle will be held later in the year with even more
great prizes, so please continue to support your local school as all monies
raised are used for the direct benefit of all pupils.
A date has been set for the ever-popular Blakedown School Christmas Craft Fair. It takes place on Saturday 24th November. It's the ideal opportunity for a spot of early Christmas shopping, and there'll be gifts, decorations, wrapping paper etc as well as lots to keep the children amused. Look out for further news in the coming months.

It's full steam ahead for Blakedown's playground transformation
The Friends of Blakedown Playground are delighted to announce that the fundraising campaign to pay for a complete refurbishment of the children's playground has been successful! We have secured a very substantial amount, including a grant from the Norman Dawson Trust. Subject to planning permission, we hope that the work will take place in August.
We would like to invite you to join us and view the plans on Saturday 9th June between 10.30 and 11.30 at the Scout Hut on the Millennium Green. There will be an opportunity to put any questions to SMP playgrounds, the company that will supply and install the new equipment.

Christian Aid Week 13 - 19 May, 2007
Please give generously to house-to-house collectors during the week, and if you yourself are able to be a new collector, Mary Macdiarmid (700776) or Diana Ingham (68908) would be pleased to hear from you. Also, if existing collectors are unable to help this year, please let us know as soon as possible.
The service that launches Christian Aid Week will be held at Blakedown
Church at 6.30 p.m. on Sunday, 13th May. Members of all the churches in
Hagley and district will be taking part. Also, Saturday, 12th May their
will be a sponsored walk starting from the Free Church in Hagley then on
to St Saviour's, St John's and St Leonard's in Clent then back to the Free
Church for refreshments. Please consider taking part yourself or sponsoring
a walker from our churches.

NEWS IN THE VILLAGE MAGAZINE
The magazine is only as good as the village news it conveys. It is so important that we receive regular reports from all village organisations. It would be interesting to know how all our sports teams fare in their matches, organisations' activities, etc . . . Perhaps it may be prudent for all organisations to appoint a publicity
officer. This would make my task much simpler and ease the work of having to contact
people begging for news. In many cases it is difficult to know who the
contacts are for the organisations. At one time a Parish Directory was
produced by the Parish Council and was so useful, particularly to give
to new people when they were welcomed into the village. It should be easy
to produce in this computer age and also post it on the village website.
All we need is a volunteer to do this, so I hope there is someone who will come forward and produce this Directory for the village. It could be a group of people collating the information, possibly in conjunction with the Parish Council.
